I grew up in Beaverton, Oregon where a group of my friends and I formed a garage band in high school. We called ourselves Dementia. In the beginning, none of us knew how to play any instruments, but we were willing to learn. With the support of the other band members, I learned how to play guitar and write my own songs. I bought my first guitar when I was 16, a black left-handed Stratocaster clone, which I still have and play to this day. We didn’t get to play any shows, and eventually the band broke up. Upon leaving the band, I lacked the motivation and persistence that I had before to pursue a musical career of my own.
In 1998, I moved to Seattle, Washington and have continued to write a few songs since then. A good friend of mine that I've known since high school was listening through some old tapes that I recorded a few years ago and encouraged me to re-record them. I wasn’t crazy about the idea of working on music without a band. I was inspired by Northwest rock musicians, such as Jerry Cantrell, Mike Johnson, and Mark Lanegan, who have left their respective bands and have created highly regarded solo albums. After much thought, I decided to create my own album titled Post-Dementia.
The best songs from Dementia were re-recorded and make up the first half of the album. The second half comprises of songs that I have worked on since then. Most of those songs were written on an acoustic guitar, which I found to be more suitable for a solo album. I decided to include my own version of “Wild Flowers” by Mark Lanegan, who inspired me and kept me going more than anyone.
Like a lot of music that I enjoy, these songs mean a lot to me and provide a window into my mind that most people, even those close to me, have never seen. Post-Dementia is now available in MP3 format below. If you wish to obtain a copy of Post-Dementia on CD, e-mail me at kevin@gottcreations.com.
